Supermarket Meal Deals Under the Spotlight

Think we're exaggerating about the growing need to prepare and eat lunch with as little fuss as possible? Well, it turns out that in today's busy working environment, every minute counts. More and more people are choosing to forego their dinner break altogether: opting instead to eat at their desk. On top of that, a mere third of workers find themselves able to take their full hour's lunch break according to a Bupa study published in 2015.

Getting the most out of your meal deal

With deadlines taking precedent over delicious home cooked meals, it's easy to see why supermarket meal deals have become such a vital part of everyday life for so much of Britain's busiest workers. However, while that pre-made sandwich and pack of crisps might be a more time friendly option, they aren't necessarily kind on our waistlines.

Here's some examples of the worst offenders amongst those popular ready meal choices.

For Tesco, the worst of the bunch were their Tesco Sausage Bacon and Egg Triple sandwich, a Wispa Duo and a can of Coke. Altogether, this lunch on the go comes to a whopping 1,112 calories, including 90 grams of sugar, which equates to over six tablespoons.

The other major supermarkets have some bad offenders as well, with Sainsburys' Cheese & Tomato Pasta Salad, Walker Maxi Crisps Paprika and Juicy Water Lemons and Oranges also nudging the 1,000 calorie mark.

Luckily, it's not all bad news. The best picks actually come in at calorie counts more than capable of keeping you from cheating on your diet. If you want a filling lunch without the following guilt, you can choose the Tesco Healthy Living Roast Chicken Salad Sandwich, Walkers Sunbites and Buxton Still water or Sainsburys' Ham Sandwich without mayo, Carrot Batons and Highlands Spring Mineral Water. These meal deals come in at 337 and 316 calories respectively, with low fat, salt and sugar quantities to boot.
